The Board of Managers and Trustees of Funds of the Wayland Museum & Historical Society seek a dynamic and energetic leader to be its first Executive Director. The Executive Director will lead the Museum, engage the public, and help to preserve this unique property and collection. The first Executive Director will have the opportunity to work closely with the Board to define the role and have an impact on the WMHS’s future direction.
History of the Wayland Historical Society Inc.
The Wayland Historical Society was formed in 1954 by Wayland residents who were passionate about local history and wanted to preserve that history for the community. Now known as the Wayland Museum & Historical Society and housed in the 18th century Grout-Heard House Museum, the organization is celebrating its 70th Anniversary – a Platinum Jubilee – by expanding its staff in this search for the first Executive Director. www.waylandmuseum.org

High Priorities for the Executive Director
- Vision: Work enthusiastically and collaboratively with the Board to achieve the goals/objectives set out in the initial Strategic Plan and further the development of that Strategic Plan.
- Leadership: Empower, support, and lead a team of dedicated staff and volunteers. Collaborate with the Board to balance executive staff leadership and proper Board oversight.
- Reach: Significantly expand visibility, membership, educational programming, research services, community outreach, social media presence, and engagement to raise the institution’s profile, modernize its presentation, and expand participation in its programs.
- Sustainability: Develop and execute a fundraising plan to grow philanthropic and earned revenue support through a targeted combination of membership dues, individual and corporate donations (with Board partnership), and private and public grants, as well as legacy support through planned giving.
- Community Impact: Create deep connections with members, residents, regional and local community leaders, as well as the public, to create a welcoming, engaging, and inclusive culture in all public engagements.
Requirements
- Experience, ability, and strong desire to be a public-facing leader.
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, public history, or related fields. Master’s degree preferred.
- Demonstrated capacity for running a small museum or historical museum. Previous experience in nonprofit management a plus.
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff and volunteers and working with Board of Managers and Trustees of Funds.
- Successful grant writing and fundraising experience.
- Strong computer skills, including experience with PastPerfect, WordPress, as well as knowledge of social media and PR software.
Compensation
Hours and salary: Full time with a work-life balance centered around opening times of the museum. This position requires occasional evening and weekend hours.
Annual Salary range: $50,000 – $65,000 depending upon experience.
Additional benefits: Annually, paid vacation with flexibility and contribution toward health insurance or retirement plan.

Final candidates will be asked to submit three references and will be invited to the GHHM for a tour and final interviews with the Board/Staff, to be completed in one visit. Start date is anticipated to be Fall 2024.
Physical Demands
This position has some physical demands, including lifting boxes, moving furniture, and setting up/breaking down exhibits. The Museum building is not fully accessible, and the Director will need to be able to climb stairs and gain access to attic and basement spaces.
